Aoudad
Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) – Also called “Barbary Sheep”, this unique animal is not classified as either a sheep or a goat as it has characteristics common to both. The aoudad is endemic to the area across North Africa from Egypt to Morocco and into the Sahara. It has a tan colored short, smooth hair coat with lighter colors under the body and on the inside of the legs. The males sports “chaps” around the front legs (less developed on females) and long hair from the throat to the brisket that reaches the ground in some older males. The horns make an arc up, then out and back from the head. Although both sexes have horns, the males horn lengths are much larger, commonly reach to 30” with larger specimens not unusual.
