Arabian Oryx
Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) -Often called the “white oryx”, this is the smallest of all the oryx. It is native to the Arabian Peninsula as well as other areas in the Middle East (Israel and Jordan). This beautifully marked animal is solid white with chocolate-colored markings on the legs, head and tail. Calves are born a “cream” color and turn white as they age. Males and females have horns that are usually straight and nearly parallel. The horns are very sharp and spear-like. These desert animals can go for long periods of time without free-standing water by using the morning dew and moisture from the plants they consume. Horn lengths commonly reach 26”-31”. This animal is listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Many animals raised in the United States have been returned to their native ecosystems to provide core herds for release into their historical ranges in the Middle East.
