Axis Deer
Axis (Axis axis) -Also know as “chital” or spotted deer, the axis deer is by far the most common exotic on the Texas range. The axis deer is native to India and Sri Lanka with both males and females displaying a rich chestnut color coat with bright, white spots its whole life. The belly continuing down the inside of the legs is white along with a “bib” under the throat and white under the tail and on the front of the ears. A black dorsal stripe is very prominent in both sexes and the males display a very prominent preorbital gland. Males have sweeping antler beams coming off of a high pedicle. The typical 3 point to a side look are made up of long brow points, a second (“caudal”) tine and the main beam tip with beams that commonly reach 32” (and not uncommonly into the mid to upper 30’s range).
