Common Eland
Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx) - Largest of the world’s antelope, this striking animal may have bulls weighing up to one ton with a nearly 6’ height at the withers. Native to south and east Africa, these animals are tan and have distinct white stripes on the sides, often fading with age. They are paler under the body and with white on the side of the neck, chin and throat. They have slender, pointed ears with long snouts and large, broad hooves. The male’s dewlap is marked with a black flag and their face with a dark mask on the face and forehead. Males and females both display v-shaped, corkscrew horns. Horns of 24-30” are common in Texas.
