European Mouflon
European Mouflon (Ovis musimon) -Spread over most of Europe in recent history, mouflon were originally recorded from the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. While being the smallest of the wild sheep, it is also one of the most colorful. Sharing similar coloration, the males and females show a basically brown body with black between it and the white belly and black on the upper legs. The tails are extremely short and are easily discerned against the white rump. In males, a white saddle appears with age as does a black mane from the throat to the chest in winter. The rams will sport horns commonly from 27-30” along the curl with 8-11” bases. The majority of females are hornless. Mouflon are exclusively grazers and are often difficult to approach. The ringing of male horns clashing during the rut is a truly unforgettable sound!
