European Red Deer
European Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) – The bellow and roar of the red deer stag as he gathers his harem and fights off any challengers is a common sound heard in the fall and early winter in parts of Texas. This large deer, originally from Europe, has made a niche for itself in many other parts of the world. The reddish brown summer coat and large rusty-colored rump patch gives way to a grayer colored coat for winter. The stags will also add a mane in the winter and typically display 5-6 points on a side with a “crown” forming at the end of the main beam in prime stags (Some exceptional stags have shown 15 or more points to a side). Three foot beams are not uncommon. Known for their aggressive nature in the rut, more than one rancher has been persuaded by a protective stag to beat a hasty retreat from the area of the stag’s harem.
