Sitatunga

Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekei) – This African denizen of thick swamps has found a home in the much drier climate of parts of Texas.  Endemic to the river drainages and lakes of Africa south of the Sahara to the Rift Valley in the East and the Okavango Swamp in the south, this beautifully marked animal has been observed to elude predators by completely immersing itself except for its nostrils.  They have a well developed dew hoof and long hoofs that splay apart to allow them to walk through their muddy home ranges.  Their body seems to curve upward from the shoulder to the haunches to give a “hunched over” look when it walks.  They have vertical white stripes along the side of the body changing to spots on the haunches and lower side of the body.  The face displays a white chevron and white spots on the cheeks.  A dorsal stripe is white on males and black on females.   Only males have horns with measurements in the mid-20” range along the curl being common.
