White-Tailed Deer

White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) – Most people that spend any time hunting or viewing animals in Texas have seen the “white flag” of a wary, departing white-tailed deer!  It is often accompanied by a loud snort.  The most numerous of the three endemic deer species in Texas, it populates most areas of the state and is the most important big game species in Texas.  Depending on the area, the upper body of the white-tailed deer is uniform in color ranging from gray to reddish to brown to very dark.  The belly and inside of legs are white as well as underneath the tail and a white throat patch.  The top of the tail is usually dark as is parts of the face.  All of the major points of the antlers come off of the main beam.  The does do not grow antlers.  Their food choices are varied depending on the area they occupy.
